Ava DuVernay does it again and this time, Goapele is not only heard but adorns the Miu Miu Women’s Tale as an actress in the film. The Door, by DuVernay is a celebration of the transformative power of feminine bonds, and a symbolic story of life change. You say, “Of course Goapele. Makes sense.” Interview Magazine describes the film and Goapele’s performance, “They seem to be dropping by to cheer her up from an apparent divorce, and each companion helps her pick an ensemble to wear out—first to dinner, then to a nightclub, then to a concert, where singer-songwriter Goapele steals the scene with her vocals.”

She was part of a Music Panel at the pop-up store back in August and rang in the store’s official launch on October 4 in an electrifying performance with San Francisco’s elite. On her latest single selection, Undertow, Goapele proves that her six year absence from music didn’t remove the soul from her soul.  Backed by production from Malay, who also worked with Frank Ocean on Channel Orange, Goapele lays down her hypnotizing vocals while backed by a surprisingly bass heavy beat. Does Undertow have you yearning for your Goapele live music fix? If so, the singer will be performing later this summer in both Los Angeles (August 2nd, El Rey) and in New York (August 14, Summer Stage), in addition to a feature part in upcoming film Sparkle. The film, featuring “Play”, earned DuVernay, a Best Director Award at Sundance, the first African American to do so. Goapele also participated in a panel discussion “Music in Film” held at the GRAMMY Museum. Goapele spoke with host Garth Trinidad (KCRW) about her involvement in the upcoming film Sparkle, starring the late Whitney Houston, and Jordin Sparks. Sparkle features Goapele’s first role in a feature film in which she plays the lead singer of a group competing against the title character, Sparkle. Goapele had the opportunity co-write and perform an original song in the film and showcase her acting abilities. She credits Sparkle director, Salim Akil as an important factor in securing her participation in the project along with producer Debra Martin Chase.

Goapele also graced the audience with an acoustic set including “Play”, her latest single “Tears on My Pillow” and the crowd favorite “Closer.”

Goapele shared the program with the legendary Brenda Russell and newcomer, Malaysian singer Yuna. Brenda co-wrote a song with Stevie Wonder for the film John Q. and was also the co-writer of the score for musical adaptation of The Color Purple. Yuna was discovered on MySpace while in law school and after being discovered by an American manager, she is now on several music festivals and tours performing original songs including the Pharrell Williams produced track, “Live Your Life.”
